Item - This is a lovely well made Cheese Tray and Knife made with different types of native New Zealand Timbers/Woods laminated together with Glass Insert showing a 'Marae', a Maori Meeting Place, produced by the Sovereign Woodworkers Limited of Whanganui, New Zealand, Circa 1960/70s. The Tray retains it's original paper label to the underside (please see pics)
Maker - Sovereign Woodworkers Limited of New Zealand
Stamps - The Tray retains it's original paper label that reads as follows - "SOVEREIGN" CHEESE TRAY New Zealand Timbers Species named in sequence from centre. Rewarewa, Kahikatea, Pukatea, Tawa, Towai, Kahikatea, Matai. The label also explains about the cheese knife having a Koruru (carved human face) of Maori tradition, and also details about the Marae which is pictured on the glass plate (Please See All Pics).
Construction - Native New Zealand Woods, Glass Plate and Paua Shell eyes to the cheese knife.
Circa - 1960/70s
Dimensions - 10.125" by 5.75" (1.85" in depth)
Weight - 524 gram
Condition -Very Good Used Condition (please refer to photos)
Other Interesting Points - Sovereign Woodworkers Limited of Whanganui, New Zealand started creating souvenirs made of New Zealand Timbers in the early 1960s including Rulers, Pencil Boxes, Bowls, Lidded Jars, Trays, Models, Tea Stands and even Tables; briefly being known as Sovereign Woodware in the 1980s they are now part of the Timber Arts Company of Bulls, New Zealand (Please see all Photos).
