Torquay Potteries/ Motto Ware
Is a generic name given to the potteries of South Devon that produce pottery from the distinctive red earthenware found in the region; with 'Motto ware' forming the bulk of the wares known as Torquay Pottery. The pieces were produced for the souvenir market from the early part of the 20th Century right through to the 1960s. The designs of 'Motto Ware' more often than not feature Cottages, Flowers (Devon Violets in particular), Boats, etc.....all pieces also feature a motto with the early pieces having their inscriptions in normal English though later pieces having an exaggerated Devonshire dialect which appealed more to the tourist trade. The pieces were produced from the early part of the 20th Century right through to the 1960s.
