Other Interesting Points - The Starching of clothing has been around since the 16th century when the upper classes would stiffen their collars and ruffs of fine linen. Starching is a coating that is applied to the clothing to stiffen the fabric and provide smooth and crisp edges. The starch would also help to catch the dirt and sweat and would be easily washed away along with the starch. One of the most well known Starches of the 20th Century was Robin Starch, the bird could be said to have a 'crisp' image which is no doubt why the name was chosen in 1899 for the starch produced by Reckitt & Sons of Hull.
