Other Interesting Points - In the 1920s the Sacker's (a Family of Barbers) developed a fine toothed metal comb capable or removing the egg & shells of head lice. However, it required a practised worker to perform the process effectively and fairly painlessly. Nurses in Schools continued to use the tool even after the introduction of insecticidal shampoos and lotions, to distinguish treated from untreated heads; School Nurses have carried out head inspections in Schools since 1890...I am sure some of us will remember with such fondness the visits from Nitty Nora the Bug Explorer!
Derbac soap was a black soap with a strong odour that was lathered into the hair and scalp and allowed to remain for 10 minutes, which in turn would immobilise the head lice but not immediately kill them this would happen over the next 24 hour period. It was widely recommended at the time by medical professionals that a weekly head wash using Derbac soap.
