Other Interesting Points - Born in Paisley in 1825, John Polson was to become a famous cornflour manufacturer after attending Paisley Grammar School and the Andersonian College in Glasgow he joined the family business who manufactured muslin in Paisley.
In the 1830s the Polson family firm was joined by another muslin producer William Brown and Son a firm that had relocated from Glagow to Paisley, together they formed Brown & Polson at Thrushcraigs, Paisley. John had a breakthrough in 1854 when he patented his edible starch which he marketed as Brown and Polson's Patent Corn Flour".
Cornflour has many uses including being a thickener for gravy and soup and also as a base for custards, baby foods and blancmanges.
John Polson died in 1900, though by then Brown & Polson had become the largest producer of Starch products in the United Kingdom additional premises were set up at Colinslee, Baterholm and Falside Road were it remained until it closed in 1996.
The company trademark name still remains and it is now used by a company operating out of Lincolnshire.
