Other Interesting Points - Although today the View-Master is mainly considered as a toy, it's original appeal and use was geared towards families and adults and as alternative to the picture postcards and earlier simple stereoscopic viewers. The first viewers and reels were produced after a chance meeting between Harold Graves (president of Sawyers - a Postcard Company) and photographer William Gruber who was experimenting with stereo photography on 35mm film. Shortly after, Gruber was to invent the first View-Master system of round discs carrying stereo pairs and a simple-to-operate hand-held viewer, Graves loved the idea and together they formed a partnership and started production. The Model A Viewer as it was to be known was unveiled at the 1939 New York World's Fair and was an instant success. During WW2 the US government purchased 100,000 View-Masters and six million disk to aid soldiers identify enemy planes, artillery and ships from far away. The humble View-Master has continued to entertain many generations and has been produced in many styles with this particular example dating from the 1980s.
