Vintage Engineers Pocket Fob Watch Millgate High & Low Reading Voltmeter Circa 1920s Battery Tester
- Customer Reviews
Warning - these meters can be very dangerous as insulation to the metal case could be faulty and expose the user to very high currents or voltages....but are ideal for testing small batteries...
Item - Vintage Engineers Pocket Watch Style 'Millgate' Voltmeter measuring 0-120 Volts & 0 to 6 Volts, Circa 1920s.....for more info see below

The covering on the insulated cable is also a little frayed in two places but not exposing any bare wires
Other Interesting Points - Pocket watch style Voltmeters were first used in the 1880/90s but became widespread during the 1920/30s with most having a brass case that was typically nickel plated though Bakelite examples are known. The case was normally connected to the negative connection, an arrangement that caused numerous electric shocks especially when the rubber insulation within failed. These little testers were used for many tasks but they were designed to be used by Radio Engineer's for measuring the "plate" (anode) voltage of thermionic valves in radios and their grid voltages hence the two separate scales one measuring 0 to 12 volts and the other measuring 0 to 120 volts which was dependent on which spike (foot) was used at the bottom of the meter. The insulated wire that came from the top of the meter was touched onto the negative terminal while the spike/foot was placed on the positive terminal and the reading would be taken from the scale.
