Item - Vintage Art Deco 'Pentagon Form' Chrome Mantle/Desk Clock with ABEC (All British Escapements Co.) '8 day' movement, Circa 1930s in full working order
Maker - ABEC (company formed in 1928 after Smiths Clocks of England acquired Jaeger in 1927)
Marks - Stamped to winder and the regulator cover with the ABEC trademark. The rear is also stamped with MADE IN ENGLAND, this in turn is also printed to the face along with 8 DAY.
Circa - 1930s
Construction - Chrome Plate - Glass Face.
Country of Origin - England
Dimensions - 7.75" by 5.125"
Weight - 880 gram (deceptively heavy for it's size)
Condition - Excellent Used Condition and in full working order, there is of course some slight signs of wear and age to the chrome and a couple of light scratches to the glass (only noticeable on close inspection and correct angle), but overall Excellent condition consummate too age.
Other Interesting Points - In 1927, Smith & Sons acquired an interest in the English Jaeger company who manufactured clocks, watches and motoring/aviation instruments. The following year A.B.E.C. Ltd. (All British Escapements Company) was created to manufacture escapements for both Smiths and Jaeger clocks. In 1931 Smiths English Clocks Ltd. was created to produce domestic clocks and the new company became the watch and clock division of S Smith & Sons (Motor Accessories) Ltd.
