Other Interesting Points - Samuel Ryder, born 24 March 1858 was an English businessman, entrepreneur, golf enthusiast, and golf promoter. He originated the idea of selling garden seeds in "penny packets" and built a very successful business on the concept. After funding an international golf competition in 1926, he sponsored the Ryder Cup, donating a gold trophy for the first biennial golf championship between the best professional golfers in the United States and the United Kingdom just a year later in 1927. The Ryder Cup was soon to become golf's most important team competition.

In the 1890s, Samuel Ryder started to sell packets of seeds through the post, priced at one penny each. Other seed merchants also made postal sales, but their packets were much more expensive. He started selling from his home in St Albans and kept his stock in the garden shed of his terraced house on Folly Lane, and was assisted by his wife and daughter. The packets would be posted each Friday so that his customers, working men, would receive them for their time off on Saturday afternoons. The business grew rapidly and Ryder became wealthy. Eventually, the business moved to a large packaging workshop on Holywell Hill, St. Albans, employing around 100 staff.

He also established a separate herb business with his brother James in 1922, Heath and Heather; James became the superintendent of Heath & Heather, producing books on herbs and lecturing throughout the country. The business was to grow very successfully with Heath & Heather having around 50 shops by the middle of the 20th Century, it was eventually bought up by Associated Health Foods in 1968 who added Health Foods,Vitamins and Food Supplement lines to the product range, a couple of years later in 1970 it was acquired by Booker McConnell who renamed the health stores Holland & Barrett.

Heath & Heather do still exist today in their own right and still have a strong connection to their heritage as herbal specialists as they are the UK’s No.1 tea & herbal infusion brand in the health sector producing a fantastic range of fruit and herbal infusions .
