Other Interesting Points - Guinness was founded in 1759 though did not advertise very much and relied on word of mouth to promote and market their product. During the early part of the 20th Century sales of Guinness start to fall into decline so they hired S. H. Benson of London who had a certain John Gilroy as their Art Director, the man behind many of Guinness's greatest advertisement campaigns including Guinness For Strength and The Zoo Animal Series. Guinness started to blossom again and started to have other ideas for marketing including exact replicas of their bottles in miniature. These bottles were first produced in 1957 and soon became known as 'Lilliput Bottles' even in some cases being supplied in miniature cardboard crates.
They were an instant success but unfortunately supply could not keep up with demand....as the early bottles were filled and labelled by hand which was very time consuming. This all changed when a miniature filling machine and self-labeling machine was manufactured, The Crown Cork Company also stepped into help and manufactured and supplied a miniature hand crowner and of course miniature Guinness Crown Cork Seals. It was soon discovered that there was also a problem with evaporation from the bottles when stored upright on the shelves, the seal would dry out and let the contents escape this was rectified by placing a small plastic insert into the neck of the bottle. Despite these efforts it is still quite common to find vintage examples missing either all or part of their original contents.
On a note of caution, it is believed by many that the bottles were filled with Guinness Stout, this is not true and in fact the contents were not intended for human consumption.
There has been many variants (I believe over 120) of the miniature Guinness Bottles including the Guinness Bi-Centenary 1759-1959, The Mayflowers (I and II). The Liverpool Charter Anniversary, British Exhibition - New York 1960 and the Souvenir Bottle for the Opening of the Guinness Brewery in Ikeja in 1963......to name but a few....I give you the Guinness Miniature Bottle a truly overlooked collectable from the past.
