Item - Vintage Purma Special Camera made by Purma Cameras of London, Circa 1937-51 and used 127 Roll Film. This rather simple but stylish Camera is made from Black Bakelite Moulded Plastic and was designed by Raymond Loewy....and even though it is quite a simple camera it has a few interesting features...first of all it has a screw on cap which prevents the shutter from being cocked or released, it is also believed to be the first ever camera to feature plastic optics....but without doubt the most interesting feature is the gravity shutter, designed by Alfred Mayo. The camera features 3 speeds though this is not set by a lever, switch, etc.... it is set by the orientation of the camera....if the camera is held flat to a achieve a speed of 1/150 (medium set), to set in slow (1/25) or fast speed (1/450) it is either turned vertically left or vertically right as indicated by the viewing window....and as the camera was a square format, so it was irrelevant which way round it was held....clever! (please see all photos).
