Item - Pair of Early Royal Letters Patent (as supplied to Edward VII) Eugen Sandow's Patent Gentlemen's Spring Grip Dumb-bells in Original Tin complete with Original 24 Page Instruction Book.

The Instruction Book contains the following -

  • Cover Picture of Eugen Sandow preparing for his daily exercise with his grip dumb bells
  • Genral Instructions
  • The Use of Sandow's Spring Grip Dumb-Bells for the Cure of Modern Complaints
  • 19 Exercises with Instructions and B&W Instructional Photographs 
  • x2 Anatomical Muscle Charts
  • Illustrations of the Range of Grip Dumb-Bells as shown above

The weights were produced by Sandow's Grip Dumb Bell Company of Bury Street, New Oxford Street, London, Circa 1910; Sandow also went on to have works in Burnham, Birmingham, Berlin, Paris and New York. On opening the hinged tin we find the original Sandow Spring Grip Dumb Bells label which is printed with the variants or sizes - Gentlemen's, Ladies, Youths, Children etc...and also General Rules, Ad for Sandow's Embrocation and company address.

Maker - Sandow Grip Dumb-Bell Company of Bury Street, New Oxford Street, London, England

Stamps - The Weights are stamped to their insides with the SANDOW name and also PATENT.

Construction - Nickel Plated with Steel Springs and Morocco-covered handles, Tin Box and Instruction Book

Circa - 1910s

Dimensions - 6.5" in length

Weight - Dumbbells - 2500 grams, the tin & book weigh 405g...so total weight unpackaged is just under 3 kilogram

Condition - The Weights are in Excellent Used Condition and fully usable complete with all seven springs. The Tin Box & Book are also in Excellent Used Condition (please refer to photos)

Other Interesting Points - Eugen Sandow (April 2, 1867 – October 14, 1925), born Friederich Wilhelm Müller, was a pioneering body-builder of the Victorian era and is often referred to as the "Father of Modern Body-building".
