Item - Pair of Early Royal Letters Patent (as supplied to Edward VII) Eugen Sandow's Patent Gentlemen's Spring Grip Dumb-bells in Original Tin complete with polishing cloth. The weights were produced by Sandow's Grip Dumb Bell Company of Victoria Embankment , Savoy Corner, London, England, Circa 1903; the company moved a short while after to Bury Street in London and also went on to have works in Burnham, Birmingham, Berlin, Paris and New York. On opening the hinged tin we find the original 'Art Nouveau' Sandow Spring Grip Dumb Bells label which is printed with the variants or sizes - Gentlemen's, Ladies, Youths, Children etc...and also Instructions for Use....also attached is the original retailers label for a Piggott Bros. & Co., (Piggotts) Complete Athletic Outfitters of Bishopgate St. Without, London; Piggotts are a company stepped in tradition and history but are probably best known for producing and installing the World Famous 'West End' Christmas Lights in London for over 50 years. The tin not only houses the weights but also their original cleaning cloth with advertising for Sandow's Emborcation....also note the address - Victoria Embankment not the later Bury Street.Maker - Sandow Grip Dumb-Bell Company of Victoria Embankment, Savoy Corner, London, England
Stamps - The Weights are stamped to their insides with the SANDOW name and also PATENT; they are also stamped within the spring housings with the date 16/02/03, this either cast date or patent date (will check).
Construction - Nickel Plated with Steel Springs and Morocco-covered handles
Circa - 1903
Dimensions - 6.5" in length
Weight - Dumbells - 2700 grams (1350 grams each dumbbell), the tin weighs 300g...so total weight unpackaged 3 kilogram
Condition - Weights are in Excellent Used Condition complete with all seven springs though there is some slight wear to the plating. The cloth is Very Good Used Condition as is the cloth...with both showing signs of age & wear (please refer to photos)
