The Combined Developer was produced by Sandow's Health Appliance Company Ltd of 7 Percy Street, London, Circa 1920/30s; Sandow also went on to have works in Burnham, Birmingham, Berlin, Paris and New York.
The Combined Developer was an early form of gym and could be arranged as a Chest Expander, Wall Exerciser and Body Exerciser. This idea was original developed by Alexander Whitely in 1894 using a pulley system...and then in 1897, Alexander Whitely teamed up with Eugen Sandow, considered by many to be the "father of body-building." Sandow acted as an agent and performed demonstrations as he travelled around promoting the product. Sandow then teamed up with Whitely to make a new machine, the Sandow-Whitely Improved Exerciser. But after a year, Sandow quit to start his own rival business in France prior to moving to England. His new product, the Sandow Combined Developer, took out the pulley system and attached removable weights to the handles. Although there is reason to believe that Whitely filed for bankruptcy in 1898, advertisements for the Whitely Exerciser show the device was available for sale well into the 1900s.
This particular set was retailed by Redmayne & Todd of Nottingham, England for 18 shillings and 6 Pence.
