Brief History of Holland Toffee, Southport

Holland Toffee of Southport, Merseyside can trace it's routes in the confectionery business back to the later part of the 19th Century. Founded by Arthur Holland the company produced Toffee and confectionery under the slogan 'Best On Earth'. The company had reasonable success for the first part of the 20th Century though it did not really boom until after WW2, when Arthur introduced a shift working system to his employees so that the factory could remain open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in turn increasing production. In 1953 Holland's started to export Toffee to the USA, sugar was still rationed, but extra sugar was available to producers for export only. In 1954 the running of the company was handed over to Arthur's two sons - Jack & Peter and the business was renamed JA & P Holland Ltd. A period of expansion was to follow with purchase of two rival toffee companies Fillery's & Palm. Fillery's had an existing contract with Marks & Spencer, who's high standards brought with them a new factory build. Initially the factory produced 7,000 tons of toffee per annum all packed in glass jars. New products were also introduced including 'Penny Arrows' which became a huge success with the children of the time. The TV advertising campaign for the new sweets featured a young Bonnie Langford. By the early 1960s the success of Hollands Toffee was starting to waiver and profits were declining rapidly. In 1965 James Goldsmith (British Billionaire) stepped in and bought Holland Toffee adding it to his Cavenham Confectionery empire and started to rejuvenate the ailing business by pouring millions pounds of investment in, including new machinery from Germany, the purchase of boiled sweet manufacturer 'Parkinsons of Doncaster'. The biggest success though without doubt of 1965 and Goldsmith was the introduction of a square chewy sweet called a 'Chewit'. The Holland Factory remained on Virginia Street in Southport producing confectionery including 'Chewitts' until 2006 when production was moved to Slovakia, the factory has now been demolished to make way for housing.
