Item - Antique Patent Applied For "Sol" Razor Blade Strop manufactured by Frank Solomon & Co. (PTY.) LTD of Muizenberg, South Africa, Circa 1920s.
Frank Solomon was a RAF pilot along side his brother Shirley in World War 1 after being demobbed at the end of the war the enterprising brothers decided to buy two DH6 Aircraft & Spares and had them shipped to South Africa so that they could set up a business arranging pleasure flights.
The business opened in 1919 and soon became quite a success with the Brothers advertising "flips" for 3 guineas at the time, they took on extra pilots (former RAF pilots), unfortunately there was a crash and the pilot and 3 passengers lost their lives.
Undeterred the brothers then went into aerial photography which was highly successful until one fateful day when Shirley was flying the engine cut out and he had to ditch the plane leaving it unrepairable.
The Solomon Brothers were extremely enterprising running many businesses including Frank Solomon & Co (Pty) Ltd of Muizenberg... looking back at the strop and the materials and construction used it certainly has that aircraft look!
The Strop is made from Aluminium with it's original paper label within the lid with 'Directions for Use' and also the details that this is a Patent Applied For Version... in other words pre Patent being registered, it also highlights that this is a Model B Version... we have never seen another "Sol" Strop let alone a 'Model A', this is one very scarce razor strop.
The Strop is easy to use the blade would have been wiped and placed over the two pins (please note the wooden slide block) , the 'U' piece would then be placed on top and with gentle pressure slid back and forth to strop the blade.
