Other Interesting Points - From the discovery of the tuberculosis bacterium by Robert Koch in 1882 and the noting of the infectious nature of spit to cause other people to become infected there needed to be containment. The simplest solution was to develop a means to contain the sputum, and the sputum flask (AKA a pocket spittoon) was born as a measure to contain it and study the sputum. Dr. Peter Dettweiler, himself a sufferer of tuberculosis, was the first to produce one commercially For more information regarding 'Blue Henry' Sputum Flask's please see here and if you really want to learn I highly recommend Ivo Haanstra brilliant book.
