Item - Unusual Original Antique Metropolitan Police Whistle produced by J. Hudson & Co of Barr Street, Birmingham, England, Circa 1884 stamped with the Birmingham Small Arms Inspection Mark to the ring and the stamp body stamp of L.J.C.M.B.LD (please see all pics).
This whistle is probably one of the most interesting whistle we have ever had...
Why? You May enquire... Well, the whistle in question is stamped with the initials L.J.C.M.B.LD.... which was the abbreviation for the London Joint City and Midland Bank Limited between 1918 until 1923, later becoming Midland Bank before being acquired by #hsbc... Ok, so this is mildly interesting....
But on closer inspection you look at the ring and it is stamped with a Crown Mark with a B and a 1 below, this is in fact the Inspection Mark of the Birmingham Small Arms Factory (BSA), yes, the people that made the motorbikes.
This whistle was made by Joseph Hudson of Birmingham to be used by the Metropolitan Police, circa 1884 and would have been sent to BSA to be inspected and then stamped with the inspection mark as shown in picture 3. So, the question remains why was a whistle that was produced in 1884, ordered by the Metropolitan police, inspected by BSA under orders from the home office, to be sat there blank until Circa 1918 when it was sold/used by a Bank?
