Item - German Antique Open Frame Corkscrew stamped 'Bodega 2', patented by Ernst Scharff, August 29, 1899.
Scharff's patented mechanism allowed a cork to be removed in one continuous turning motion of the handle. When the handle is turned to the top of the shaft, the two arms fall to their lowest position. This locks the handle in position so the worm can be fully inserted into the cork. Once the worm is fully inserted, the arms rise "unlocking" the handle which glides down the shaft raising the cork out of the bottle into the frame.
Maker - Ernst Scharff of Germany
Stamps/Marks - Stamped to the top of the frame on both sides with BODEGA 2; the number two relates to the size as this corkscrew was produced in three sizes with 1 being the smallest.
