Item - Antique Elizabeth Whiteley & Sons of Sheffield Tailors/Dressmakers 10.25" Scissors, Circa 1847-62.
William Whiteley & Sons (Sheffield) Ltd were established back in the 18th Century (Circa 1760) by James Whiteley, the mark '332' (as seen on many Whiteley Scissors) is a corporate mark and was granted by the Company of Cutlers to George the son of William (son of James) in 1791; however the business did not appear in Sheffield Directories until the late 1830s when it was operated by William Whiteley.
William Whiteley sadly passed in 1847 aged 50 and the running of the enterprise was taken over by Elizabeth, William's Widow until about 1862, Elizabeth was a very strong & dominant personality of the time "she smoked a clay pipe; and in the days when travel was still very difficult she insisted on making many business trips, particularly to Ireland where she established the reputation of Whiteley Scissors.
Elizabeth passed away in 1868 and the business was renamed 'William Whiteley' after Elizabeth's Son, the company is still in existence to this day and still based in Sheffield.... For more info regarding the history of Whiteley please see here
