This is a vintage 90 page catalogue produced by Sotheby's of New Bond Street, London England, detailing their sale of a collection of hebrew books that was the property of Dr. Yeshayahu Shachar (1936-1977), who was an outstanding and pioneering scholar in the field of the history of Jewish Art and folklore; he also had a deep interest in the Hasidic movement, as well as a mastery of the antisemetic portrayal of the Jews, primarily in Germany and England. He completed his doctorate at the Warburg Institute under the supervision of Professors Ernst Gombrich and Otto Kurz, and his thesis was later published by the Warburg Institute ("The Judensau - A Medieval Anti-Jewish Motif and its History", 1974). In 1975 he published a major paper: "The Emergence of the Modern Pictorial Stereotype of the Jews in England", Jerusalem, 1975. Both works recieved high praise from many scholars. Before that he produced the outstanding catalogue of the Feuchtwanger Collection of Jewish Art (Jerusalem, Israel Museum, 1971), a massive volume describing in minute detail Jewish ceremonial objects d'art. It is possibly the best catalogue in this new Jewish field. During the last few years of his life, he was working on a scientific edition of "The Praises of the Ba'al Shem Tov" (Shivchei Habesht), but through illness was unable to complete it. Dr. Shachar was a passionate collector of Jewish Art, Biblography, Hasidut, Antisemitica, and other subjects of Jewish interest. After the death of Professor Joseph G. Weiss (1919-1969), a world-wide famous scholar of Hasidism, Dr. Shachar acquired his complete collection of Hasidic books and historical monographs. It is one of the richest collections in Jewish Art, Hasidism and Antisemitica. Hence the auction was the library of two remarkable scholars, both of whom died tradically at an early age. The sale consisted of 757 lots over 2 days in November 1980.
The Catalogue measures 7.25" by 9.75" and is in Excellent Used Conditon, the Estimate list measures 8.25 by 5.75" and is also in Excellent Used Condition.
