A Brief History of The Garden Company Limited, Hong Kong (1926 to Present)

In 1926 The Garden Company was founded by Mr T.F. Cheung and his cousin Mr. W.O. Wong, their first retail branch was opened in 1927 in Des Voeux Road, Central Hong Kong. In 1931 the Central Branch was moved to a much larger 3-storey rented premises at Ap Liu Street, Shum Shui Po, using locally produced machinery the factory ran 24 hours a day, producing biscuits by day, and bread and cakes at night. A great fire in 1932 destroyed the factory, with a mistake in the insurance policy resulting in a complete loss leading to a suspension in production until new equipment and premises were secured through financing. In 1935 the company bought a 475 sq. metre site in Castle Peak Road for $10,000 to house the new factory. With the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937 the company went into round-the-clock opeartion for 7 days to produce 90,000kg of Army Crackers. The company was to move again in 1938 to a larger 1,400 sq. metre premises once again in the Castle Peak Road, and was contracted by the British Hong Kong Government to be a major supplier of war time army supplies. In 1941 the Castle Peak Road Factory was occupied by Japanese Troops and all production materials, facilities were demolished and once again production came to a halt. Production was rectified by the end of the War, with Garden growing into one of the leading Food enterprises in Hong Kong, this was to lead the company to register as a limited company in 1947. Inspired by a trade visit to the U.K. in 1948, Mr T.F. Cheug ordered the latest, fully-automated biscuit production machinery from Britain, this though would not be fully fuctioning until 1952. With the new machinery in full swing the company could produce 5,000 kg of Biscuits per day. The 1960s saw the introduction of the famous "Life Bread" and "Pop-Pan", which won a Gold Medal at the prestigious International Monde Selection, a competition that reconizes quality products, this was a first for the Hong Kong Industry. The Garden Company celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 1976, opened its first Ice-Cream plant in 1979, in 1981 it was celebration for the company again as it recieved another Gold Medal from the International Monde Selection, this time for its "Peanut Wafer" biscuit. The Garden Company maintains its hold on the Marketplace with its excellent quality products and service to this day.
