The Gazette

Talented Ryan into the final

Published Date: 18 September 2008

TUNEFUL Blackpool youngster Ryan Cregan has hit all the right notes to win a place in the final of a national singing competition.

Idol 2008 offers the winner a chance to record their own album and take part in a UK tour.

Ryan, 12, had already beaten thousands of other young hopefuls to get through to the regional finals, which were held in Salford.

He wowed the judges and audience with his rendition of Circle of Life – Elton John’s theme song from the film The Lion King.

Ryan has been having singing lessons since the age of seven, when he used to sing to cheer his mum up – after the family home burnt down.

Mum Tracey said: “Our house at Orchard Avenue burnt down in 2003.

“I was really upset and the one thing I had in my life was Ryan singing.

“I realised he had a good voice, so sent him to singing lessons.

“He was very nervous at first, but now he loves it.

“The judges were really impressed by him, especially the power of his voice as he is only 12.

“He was up against some tough competition, up against 17-year-olds.

“I was just hysterical when he won.”

Ryan will now perform at the national final, in November, in Plymouth, which last year was broadcast on ITV.

He is also taking part in the semi-final of the Daily Star’s Search for a Star competition, which is held on North Pier, at the end of this month.

Ret on The Net

Intrigued?? Yes, so was I, which is why I had to call them and find out what this was all about. Well, I didn't know much about antiques then, and still don't, but I can now safely say, "I know a man who does." I met up with Dave Skinner and his partner Tracey, the founders of www.retonthenet.co.uk  to find out a little more about their business and how they had started out. Their's is definitely a story of strength and determination, against the odds and their enthusiasm was infectious.
From very humble beginnings they have overcome many obstacles to start their own antiques business.

Dave's passion began at the tender age of 8 and over the past 25 years he has read, researched, studied and collected vintage items.
With the help of the Iain scott Enterprise Island, the Business venture group and the Get Started team in Blackpool, Dave has been able to realise his dream....selling his beloved antiques to customers all over the country and the world via his brand new web store. Dave has original items dating as far back as the 1880s. In addition to this, they offer a bespoke range of products  called "Vintage Visuals". These are a range of antique items presented in a modern day manner. They are also specialising in vintage and Retro bicycles. A real blast from the past!!
At retonthenet they strongly believe in the 3 "R's" Recycling-Reusing-Reinventing. So you can be safe in the knowledge that buying from them, you to are doing your bit for the environment.
Ret on the Net is a real family affair, with Tracey's young son, Ryan also helps out in his spare time. That is of course when he is not following his other passion....singing. Ryan is definitely one to watch out for and can be seen (and heard) at various venues across Blackpool entertaining throughout the Summer season, and all this at the ripe old age of 11.  I have added a link through to Ryan on YouTube....Blackpool has, without doubt, got talent.

Good luck to them all, from the Blackpool Town team.

Ryan Cregan Update 04/08/08

We would like to send more congratulations and good luck wishes to Ryan, as his  success continues. Ryan has just got through to Idol 08 done by ITV. He will be competing in the regional finals at The willows in Salford Manchester on the 14th September.
He has also got through to the Lancashire's got Talent and will be performing at Fishergate Shopping Centre, Preston, next Saturday, 09/08/08 at 11am, and as if that is not enough for such a young talent, he is also in the Semi finals of the Sunday Star newspaper competition "Search for a Star", performing at Blackpool's North Pier on the 28th September.
Well Done Ryan, from all at BlackpoolTown!!

THIS talented youngster is preparing to sing his way to success

Ryan Cregan, 12, beat thousands of other young hopefuls to get through to the regional finals of Idol 2008 – a competition for both singers and dancers.

His mum Tracey discovered her son's talent when he sang to cheer her up.

Celebrations on Enterprise Island

Celebrations on Enterprise Island

Blackpool's new army of entrepreneurs are celebrating the latest stage on their journey towards setting up in business.

The 14 people all took part in the Blackpool Enterprise Island Challenge and, three months on, some are already well on the road towards seeing their business dreams come to reality.

They gathered at the De Vere Hotel in Blackpool to celebrate the end of their 10-week "challenge" which saw them receiving specialist advice and help to teach them how to think and act like entrepreneurs.

The Enterprise Island Challenge, sponsored by The Gazette, and delivered in partnership with Blackpool Council, is a concept created by enterprise guru Iain Scott who led the Blackpool Challenge and travelled back to the town for the celebration event.

One of the Blackpool entrepreneurs, Irma Vitorano, announced at the event that her new business - making healthy cookies and muffins - had just been launched and she had already taken her first orders.

She told the audience that the challenge had given her the confidence to go into business. She added: "Thank you for helping me make my dream come true."

Iain Scott, who has led successful Enterprise Island Challenges throughout the UK, said: "It is fantastic to see how far the Blackpool Islanders have come in such a short time. Irma, for instance, has realised her business dream."

Another islander, Kelly Camm, started the challenge wanting to open a soup, sandwich and smoothie bar, but has decided on a mobile operation with fewer overheads which will be on the road soon.

David Skinner of Retonthenet.co.uk, who undertook the Challenge with partner Tracey, said: "The event was a great opportunity to network and show off our new vintage gifts product range which we developed as a result of the Challenge and will be selling over the internet."

Also taking part in the Celebration of Enterprise event were members of Blackpool Council enterprise and employment team, representatives from the Get Started team and established business people including Claire Smith who, with her husband, Mark, runs two award-winning B&Bs.
