Vintage Eye Baths, Cups & Washes.......

Eye-bath is a small vessel with a rim curved to fit the orbit of the eye; use to apply medicated or cleansing solution to the eyeball; "an eyecup is called an eye-bath in the UK". Eye baths come in many styles with the most common being cups and stem types, they also produced in many materials including glass, pottery, china, silver, metal and plastic, etc..... Eye baths were used (and still are....) to wash out people's eyes when they became infected or tired. In the 16th century people who were wealthy had eye baths made from silver due to it's disinfectant properties; It was not until the 18th century that they were made of earthenware or porcelain and came into general use. Glass eye baths were made from the turn of the 19th century and as methods of production became standardised so did there shape, though novelty eye baths have been produced and are usually very sought after.
